Sanjay Dutt and Manyata marriage held valid
After a long drama, the wedding of Actor Sanjay Dutt and ladylove Manyata was upheld by a Mumbai sessions court, quashing an order by a lower court.
The lower court had admitted a petition filed by Manyata’s ex husband Meeraj- ur- Rehman that the couple had committed bigamy as Manyata was still married to him. In a turn around, the higher sessions court ruled that Manyata was divorced legally from Meeraj and hence was free to marry Sunjay.
Sanjay Dutt and Manyata had a court marriage in Goa on February 7, 2008 and a marriage again in Mumbai on February 11. The marriage later faced legal issues as it was said to be in violation of Muslim Personal Law (MPL). According to legal experts, a Muslim woman cannot marry a man of any other religion unless she converts herself to the religion of her would-be husband or vice-versa.
Being a Muslim by birth, there has been no proof that Manyata converted to Hinduism before marrying Dutt, except for the fact that she had earlier adopted a Hindu name.
The marriage in Goa landed into further complications. The Goa registrar objected to Manyata’s claim that she was a resident of Goa.
But the sessions court verdict finally went in favor of Sanjay Dutt and Manyata.
After Mumbai Sessions court passed the verdict, a visibly beaming actor Sanjay Dutt told the media, “I am very happy, I have full faith in the Judiciary. I have full faith in the people of my country. I just want to thank everybody. Manyata is also very happy; everyone’s blessings have come to fruition. On behalf of her, I also want to thank everybody.”
