Yash Raj films wait for some magic
After the debacle of Tashan this year, Yash Raj is ready with the second release of 2008, Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic on which all hopes are pinned.
Yash Raj which is one of the most successful production houses in India has been suffering a series of misses the last year with only one movie Chak, De ! doing well.
The rest Neal ‘n’ Nikki”, “Kabul Express”, “Ta Ra Rum Pum”, “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom”, “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” “Aja Nachle” and this year’s “Tashan” have eroded the banner’s brand equity.
Yash Chopra had set up this banner in 1979 after breaking away from his brother’s production company B.R. Films. He had reached the top with films like “Daag”, “Deewar”, “Trishul”, “Vijay”, “Mashaal”, “Chandni” and “Darr”.
His son Aditya maintained the top spot debuting with “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. Starring Shah Rukh and Kajol, it was one of Bollywood’s best entertainers ever .
Films like “Hum Tum”, “Veer Zaara”, “Dhoom”, “Bunty Aur Babli”and “Fanaa” established Yash Raj’s reputation as a production house with class and substance.
But somehow 2007-2008 has been a draught year and all hopes are pinned on Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic to revive the fortunes of the company.
Starring Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan, and directed by Kunal Kohli (the team of Hum Tum), it is inspired by Mr. India as well as Hollywood classic Mary Poppins.
How the Indian audience reacts to this feel good movie remains to be seen and Yash Raj must be waiting with baited breath!
