A film tribute to Mumbaikers
A new movie, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ is all set to depict the horror of bombings that shook Mumbai on July 11, 2006. The 2006 bombings targeted the suburban train network in India’s financial capital Mumbai.
Mumbai Meri Jaan meaning Mumbai -My love depicts how the blast affected a cross section of ordinary people and how the citizens picked up the pieces and returned back to normal life. It is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
The movie, which opens in cinemas in August, depicts the death and devastation caused by the attacks, through the eyes of a female journalist, a witness to the carnage, played by Soha Ali Khan.
The film also picturises the impact the blasts have on the lives of a business professional, an unemployed youth, a policeman and a tea stall owner.
“My film is a salute to the spirit of humankind and people who fight against such tragedies. On the day of the blasts, everyone was on the streets of Mumbai, helping,” director Nishikant Kamat said.
Seven bombs went off within 15 minutes on packed commuter trains during evening rush hour in Mumbai on July 11, 2006, killing 186 people and one of the bombers.
Mumbai suburban railway is the lifeline of Indian. More than 60 lakh people commute in it daily. The Mumbai suburban railways have the highest passenger density of any urban railway system in the world.
According to Nishikant Kamat, the idea of Mumbai Meri Jaan came just a couple of weeks after the train blasts. “The story is about us, the people who have always been directly or indirectly affected by such unfortunate tragedies,” he said.
