Walt Disney Company has acquired the overseas home video rights of Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par from UTV Motion Pictures. Apparently the deal was worth Rs 7 crores.

This is the first time an international studio has bought the video rights of an Indian film. Taare Zameen Par, which deals with the life of a dyslexic child and how a teacher tries to help the child get out of his handicap, was a critical and commercial success in India as well as the global market.

“UTV has sold the home video rights of TZP to Walt Disney Company for the US, UK, Canada and the Australian market,” confirms UTV Motion Pictures director Siddharth Roy Kapoor. Aamir Khan, the producer, director and actor of the movie, is clearly excited about the latest achievement of the film. He says, “Yes, Disney has bought the home video rights of Taare Zameen Par. We (Aamir Khan Productions) are very happy and proud to be associated with Walt Disney. They are the best when it comes to kids. The film has done well in the US and I hope the DVDs do well too.”

“Disney as a brand has association with family and children. They have seen Taare Zameen Par as content that has a brand fit. Also, the film is being seen as one of the classics of recent times. Despite it not being a conventional NRI fare, the film has done very well in the overseas market, especially in North America,” says Siddharth Roy Kapoor.

The official home video of Taare Zameen Par will have a special commentary by Aamir Khan on the making of the film, behind-the-scenes, copy of the paintings from the movie by Darsheel and Aamir amongst a host of other things
