Laptop for $ 10 for students
The success of the Tata Nano is yet to be seen. However the efforts of the Tatas to bring out a car well within the reach of the common man have been lauded be everyone. Now an effort is being made to provide laptops at lesser than Rs500 to students for higher education.
Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said that research was being conducted at two premier institutes in India, the IIT Chennai and the IIS Bangalore to achieve this breakthrough. However there are reports in the media that such a laptop may be available at $ 100.
If launched successfully the product will provide a boost to learning in India. A laptop made by Nicholas Negroponte, an alumnus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is being sold for $ 188. It is learnt that in 2006 the Indian government has rejected such an offer.
