It raised an alarm when 248 patients suffering from fever, 64 patients with gastroenteritis, 107 of suspected malaria, 24 of suspected leptospirosis and seven of suspected dengue were admitted in the city’s civic as well as private hospitals.

With the onset of the monsoon the diseases became rampant. The doctors advised the patients not to ignore any kind of fever as it could be malaria, dengue, or leptospirosis. Water contamination is considered to be the cause of this high rate of mortality.A doctor named S N Acharya expressed that “Contaminated water can cause anything from gastroenteritis, which can be treated in a couple of days to which can even claim your life.”

Leptospirosis, which has already claimed 29 lives,is transmitted through infected soil or water which actually is contaminated with the waste products of an infected animal. People contract the disease by either ingesting contaminated food or water or through the contact of broken skin and mucous membrane with the contaminated water or soil.

Because of this reason, the civic authorities have repeatedly issued warning against wading through water during the rains.Dr.Acharya is quoted to have said that “Avoid wading through water, especially if you have cuts and bruises on your feet.”
Moreover, people are being asked to cover their feet before wading through a pool of water to ensure that they don’t fall prey to these ailments.
