India beefs up disease prevention measures

According to a World Health Organisation report,350 million people will perish on account of chronic disease in the next 10 years and indian population will constitute a major part of it.This has raised a red flag in India and measures are being initiated to prevent it.

HelpYourBody‘, a campaign against the chronic diseases was launched by the Piramal group with the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. It was inaugurated by former president APJ Abdul Kalam on 16th of August.”The costs of chronic ailments are usually very high and various systems of treatment such as allopathy, ayurveda, homoeopathy, unani,and yoga should be integrated so that the treatment can be availed at an affordable cost,” said Dr.Kalam.He further opined that employers should setup health camps periodically to ensure that their employees are in good health.

The panel of experts providing sevice in this organisation will comprise of cardiologists,orthopaedics and diabetologist.The doctors will enlighten the patients about the risk factors,diagnosis management and prevention for chronic diseases like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, addiction and mental health. The organisation aims to reach the grassroot level through 90 diagnostic centres across 47 cities where tests will be carried out.

Swati Piramal, Piramal Group’s Director said “India is expected to be the chronic disease capital with over 70 million diabetics, 213 million hypertensive patients and 60 million with arthritis by 2025. We feel the government, the private sector, the medical fraternity, NGOs should come together against the onslaught of chronic diseases.Genetic causes, obesity, stress, inappropriate dietary habits and lack of exercise play a major role in causing chronic ailments.”
