Are Google, Yahoo and Microsoft promoting gender detection prenatally?
Dr. Sabu Mathew George filed a Public Interest Litigation against search engines like Yahoo India, Google India and Microsoft Corporations as these engines allegedly were illegally promoting sex determination and selection of a child prenatally through advertising in violation of the India’s Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act enacted in 1994.
The PNDT act ensures the prevention of misuse of the diagnostic techniques resulting in female feticide. The act prohibits the advertising as well as perusal of the facilities for sex selection before conception and determination of sex after conception.
Dr.Goerge said, “These companies are making a lot of money by doing highly targeted and selective advertising and our petition seeks to block these advertisements.” Sanjay Parikh, a lawyer who lodged the complaint was quoted to have said that a bench of judges comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal issued notices to the Ministries of Health and Communications & Information Technology as well as to Google India,Yahoo India and Microsoft Corporation Ltd seeking their response to the PIL.
