Yahoo decided to scrap its social networking venture “Yahoo Mash” abruptly. The network started operating from September 2007. All the Mash members have been notified through e-mail about this decision.

The e-mail to Mash members from Yahoo community manager Matt Warburton was worded as follows : “Thank you for trying out our Mash Beta service. We hope you had fun with it. Please note that we will shut down Mash on September 29, 2008. As a result, your current profile on Mash will no longer be available.”

Mash actually adopted a different approach towards ‘invitation’. The existing users could create a profile for a particular person and ask the person concerned to adopt the profile and customize it. Besides, the network provided plug-in modules which the users or their contacts could add. But, it failed to bring anything significant to the table. This will be the third failure for Yahoo in social networking business following the closure of its networking site ‘Mixd‘ last year and shut down of ‘Yahoo 360‘ earlier this year.
