Sony VAIO will be recalling approximately 73,000 laptops in the United States. Overheating of the wiring of the laptops is known to be the problem. It is expected that almost 4.5 lakh laptops will be recalled worldwide.

There are about 209 reports of overheating of the wiring worldwide. One case in US and 7 cases all over the world of consumers suffering minor burns have been reported. The laptops of VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series are affected. All customers have been notified by the company to check their laptops for potential problems.

A toll free number, 1-888-526-6219, has been set up for consumers to check if their laptops are affected. The same can also be done at http://esupport.sony.com/fixmypc. The affected users are advised to stop using their laptops immediately. Either on site repairs will be provided or consumers can choose to ship their notebooks to the Sony service center.

Sony batteries too have been recalled in the past due to overheating problems. The recall is sure to cause a dent in the reputation of the company, if not in its sales.
