West Bengal May Lose Future Investment Owing To Singur Issue

The ongoing crisis at Singur, West Bengal over industrialization of agricultural land may gift the already problem-ridden state with zero investment for the next two-three decades, market analysts observed. The issue is no more limited within the boundaries of Tata Motors and people of West Bengal, the level of agitation has already shaken root of all investments. Whatever may be the outcome of present negotiation initiated by the Honorable Governor of West Bengal, no potential investment is going to land in the state in near or distant future, said an expert.

Infosys Technologies has already expressed it’s unhappiness over the manner crisis has erupted at Singur and the way Tata Motors is forced to stay off from their operations at the much hyped Nano mother plant at Singur. Following the uncontrolled Singur agitation over the last two weeks, the software giant may not find enough reasons to invest in the state, a report said. Expressing their concern, Mr. Mohandas Pai, member of the board, Infosys, recently said, “we will have a relook and rethink on our investment plan in the state. We need stability for growth and safety of our employees”. Infosys was to invest Rs. 250 crore on the outskirts of Kolkata for setting up of a development centre to provide employment opportunities to 5,000 people. But, under the present political scenario, fate of such sensitive investment becomes quite uncertain, said a frustrated local youth.

In spite of all out efforts made by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to prove Singur row as an exceptional case, Infosys and other top-notch corporate agencies are seriously thinking to pull out their businesses from the state. Sacrificing the possibility of future investment and opening up of new income opportunities to the local un-employed youths, Mamata Banerjee and her associates are still demanding back about 300 acres of land from the Tata’s Nano project site at Singur.

Though a special four-member committee is working to find a suitable solution acceptable to all, but seeing the adamant stance taken by the opposition and the government, reaching any solution seems to be a distant dream.
