Mixed response to The Last Lear
Famous director Rituparno Ghosh’s English film ‘The Last Lear‘ released on September 12 ,2008. ‘The Last Lear‘ based on Utpal Dutt’s play ‘Aajker Shahjahan’ is touted to be the amalgamation of theatre and cinema and features Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal, Preity Zinta and Shefali Shah.
‘The Last Lear‘ was already premiered in Film Festivals in Toronto, Rome and London. Although, the film was ready for release almost a year back, its release was deliberately delayed to elicit the best possible response from the audience.
However the movie rather disappoints. Most reviews have star rated the movies with 2 or 2 and half stars out of five. The film works best when Ghosh is setting up Amitabh Bachchan’s character. Arjun Rampal combines well with the Big B. However the script meanders and fails to deliver. After interval the script is incoherent leading on to an unconvincing climax.
With such a luke warm response it is unlikely that the movie does well at the Box Office.
