Yuvvraaj bombs at Box office
Subhash Ghai’s latest offering Yuvvraaj has failed to fire up the box office in its opening weekend. It has garnered only 35% advance bookings in major multiplexes.
This makes it a major flop with its budget in the range of Rs 40 to Rs 50 crore. According to trade experts, the collections of ‘Yuvvraaj’ will slide from Monday onwards, going by its box-office showing during the first two days of its release.
They said that though the movie had extensive promotion, what it misses is originality in the storyline to hold the interest of the younger generation of cinegoers.
A trade analyst said, “Despite all his experience in filmmaking, director Subhash Ghai seems to be out of sync with the changing trends in filmmaking in Bollywood today.”
“Family dramas are for a selective audience and one reason for the low response is because the film doesn’t appeal to the youth,” said Cinemax vice-president (distribution and programming) Devang Sampat
The worldwide distribution rights for the film were sold by Mukta Arts to Eros International for over Rs 60 crore. Being a big-budget film, it saw a wide-release with about 1,000 prints
“There were a lot of expectations from this film but it hasn’t lived-up to them at all. The usual weekend audience has come to watch the film but it hasn’t pulled any extra audiences to the theatres .Even though the film has big stars and was marketed well, it hasn’t struck a chord with the audiences,” said Inox Cinemas vice-president (distribution and programming) Utpal Acharya
In comparison, Dostana, which was released during the last week, is making good collections across India even during the second week of its run.
For Subhash Ghai it is still a dry spell, ever since his last hit Taal in 1999.
