250000 Laptops for Indian children

The OLPC project, (One Laptop Per Child) has come up with plans yet again to provide cheap Laptops to children. It may be recalled that there was media frenzy over $10 Laptop some time earlier. However the reports died down without anything concrete emerging.

It is learnt that there is a tie up between Art Technica and OLPC to bring 250000 Laptops to Indian children. These will be distributed to 1500 schools all over the country. Satish Jha, the CEO of OLPC India hopes to deliver three million laptops by the end of this year. The laptop will have VIA C7-M chipset with a 1 GB memory and 4 GB storage.

In 2006 the Ministry of HRD had rejected the proposal. The $10 Laptop developed by students of Vellore Institute of Technology and IIS Bangalore turned out to be a computing device loaded with e-books and education material. This time the initiative is more promising.

However no time frame has been laid down for implementation of this project.
