Debate over iTunes sync with Palm Pre rages on in US
Success brings in more enemies than friends. The success of the newly born Palm Pre seems to have been tacitly acknowledged by its competitors. Apple has quietly released a tech note that describes the dangers of using unsupported media devices with iTunes. The writing on the wall is very clear. It seems to suggest discontinuation of sync with Palm Pre in a future version of iTunes.
Palm has decided to take the bull by its horns. Its company spokesperson Lynn Fox told All Things D’s John Paczkowski ; “If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.”
The matter boils down to decide as to who shall be the winner. Discontinuing the sync support with Palm Pre in a future version of iTunes may appease the loyalists. However the hardware-software integration has been one of the USPs for Apple. Such a discontinuation will tantamount to a virtual U Turn in its policy.
On the other hand is there any danger in leaving it intact. It is only the possibility of the Palm Pre getting ahead of iPhone. But will the newly born Pre do it so fast. Only time will tell.
